CME Applauds Navy's Introduction of Combat Fitness Tests

by CME Press Room | Published January 8, 2026

WASHINGTON – The Coalition for Military Excellence (CME), a national organization dedicated to advocating for veterans and military excellence in the U.S. armed forces, issued the following statement after the Navy introduced combat fitness tests for elite fighting units like the SEALs and fleet divers:

“CME strongly supports the U.S. Navy’s decision to implement a new combat fitness test for its most elite combat arms personnel, including SEALs, explosive ordnance disposal technicians, fleet divers, and special warfare combat crewmen. This move is a clear step in the right direction. By establishing rigorous, mission-relevant, and sex-neutral fitness standards, the Navy is reinforcing a simple but essential truth: America’s most elite fighting forces must be held to the highest possible standards of readiness, accountability, and performance.

“The new combat fitness test reflects the real-world demands these warriors face: swimming under load, performing strength tasks while fatigued, and moving quickly with combat weight. Requiring service members to pass every component underscores accountability and reinforces a culture where excellence is earned, not assumed. This is leadership based on merit in action.

“CME has long warned that lowering or diluting standards undermines trust, cohesion, and confidence within the ranks. The Navy’s approach instead prioritizes preparedness and operational realism, sending a strong message to service members, veterans, and the American public.

“We commend Navy leadership for reinforcing a culture of excellence and for ensuring that our most capable warriors remain ready to fight and win. CME will continue to advocate for policies that strengthen merit, preparedness, and accountability across the armed forces, in honor of those who serve and those who have served before them.”
