CME Statement on U.S.-Panama Canal Security Agreement

CME Press Room | Published on April 11, 2025

The Coalition for Military Excellence (CME), a national organization dedicated to advocating for veterans and military excellence in the U.S. armed forces, issued the following statement after Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a landmark deal with Panama to strengthen America’s positioning in the Panama Canal.

“CME commends Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Pentagon leadership for forging a bold and necessary security agreement to secure one of the world’s most vital strategic waterways, the Panama Canal, and directly counters the growing threat of Chinese influence in the region. This agreement is a clear reaffirmation of America’s commitment to military excellence, regional stability, and the sovereignty of our allies. By expanding joint training exercises, enhancing intelligence sharing, revitalizing previously operational U.S. military installations, and ensuring U.S. warships priority transit through the canal, Secretary Hegseth has laid the foundation for a more secure and capable partnership benefitting both nations and the broader Western Hemisphere.

“This deal reflects the foundational values of CME: strength, merit, and unwavering commitment to mission-readiness. Secretary Hegseth’s leadership makes it clear the United States will not sit idly by as China attempts to expand its influence. This agreement sends a powerful message: the Panama Canal will remain free, secure, and aligned with the interests of peace, freedom, and regional sovereignty.

“CME stands behind this initiative and urges continued bipartisan support for robust defense engagement in Latin America. This agreement is not just about protecting a canal. It's about protecting the values, interests, and future security of the American people and our allies,” said Nico Melendez, spokesman for CME.

The Coalition for Military Excellence (CME) is a national organization dedicated to advocating for veterans and military excellence in the U.S. armed forces.
